Christus Schumpert Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Hospital-Owned Project / Negotiated Contract
Location:Shreveport, Louisiana
Completed:Fall 2003
Services:Specialized care of pre-mature infants
Size:19,750 square feet

The central goal of this project was to create a children's hospital for the community by renovating space in an existing medical center. The third floor of this facility is home to a 40 bed state of the art neonatal intensive care unit contiguous to the maternity area. The NICU has been designated a Regional Level III Facility - the highest level for the treatment of critically ill newborns.

This health care project involved renovating an existing hospital to accommodate a new and expanded neonatal intensive care unit bringing three separate buildings together into one space. The main floor plan concept of the new NICU was to develop a plan based upon a womb-like elliptical shape. The nurses' station and medical records area are located at the core of the plan. Elliptical rings radiating from the core of the plan define circulation and access to the patient areas.
