BRF Masterplan
Shreveport, Louisiana
Somdal Associates lead the design and planning effort for the BRF Urban Redevelopment Master Plan — an ambitious, design-driven initiative to revitalize over 100 acres of brownfield land in the heart of Shreveport. Commissioned by the Biomedical Research Foundation (BRF), the project brings together public infrastructure, private innovation, and community heritage to reimagine a significant stretch of Kings Highway as a unified, park-like environment.
At the core of the plan is a proposed green infrastructure system centered around a new drainage basin that will alleviate downstream flooding in the Ockley Basin and Bayou Pierre. The basin and surrounding open spaces will be integrated into a comprehensive landscape framework that connects civic, healthcare, and innovation districts while improving environmental performance and quality of life.
Somdal’s planning approach weaves together existing assets, such as BRF’s InterTech Science Park and the Center for Molecular Imaging and Therapy (CMIT), with opportunities to repurpose adjacent public works properties into a catalytic development zone. The master plan introduced new pedestrian and bike corridors, restore ecological features, and highlight the historic fabric of Shreveport’s core neighborhoods.
